Thank you for writing this post. I am in the process of obtaining an Information Systems Security certificate. Once I got started, I started to wonder what types of jobs would I be qualified for and whether or not I would actually hold the title of CISSP. After researching ISC2, I'm beginning to think I should have just gone after a bachelor's degree in IS. Atleast with the bachelor's I wouldn't be required to pay to be tested on my knowledge. I figured I could get into ISC as an associate but you have to be tested in that arena also. You would think any testing that would be covered in the loan I had to take out in order to go back to school. Like you said, it's about the money.

I really liked this post because it got a lot of the swirling thoughts about this topic out of the back of my brain. I've never been the college type, so certifications are an attractive option for me. Like you said, though, all certs are not created equal and some may not even be worth it. In this particular field, I think a CISSP would be a good one for me, perhaps to go along with some future pen testing training. Thanks for helping me clear some of that up!

Nice post. Having a valid certification even for security personnel largely helps in assuring others as to the abilities to handle situations of any kind.

Very insightful! I see more benefit in the focused, technical certifications which at least simulate a real situation. Once the awareness is there, it would be nice to have someone who can actually do the work, which is difficult without experience in that exact task, be it forensic analysis, penetration testing, web application assessment, etc. I would like to see more certifications which shows deep knowledge of these areas and don't require a ridiculous amount of cash or BS CPE's. If you want to make sure someone is up to date on a subject, at least take the time to update your test and have them take it again to prove their ability.
